St. John of Damascus (675 - 749) was a Syrian priest and monk with many talents, who left an impressive record of music, theology, law, and philosophy works, although originally he started his career as a civil servant for the Caliph in Damascus. Perhaps his most famous work is this collection of sermons on icons. During his time there were many in the church opposed to images being associated with worship, believing that they were becoming idols. St. John strongly defends the use of icons from his extensive knowledge of scripture and the writings of the church fathers.
