Must Read

Hotel Hinteregger is a distinctive sanctuary nestled in the heart of Matrei (Austria), at the foot of the Osttirol Mountains. Its extravagant architecture has received numerous accolades, showcasing a contemporary and modern design. Yet, the hotel retains its own agricultural estate, a fragrant and blooming farmhouse garden, as well as a serene ambiance, nature, and coziness. Hikers, mountaineers, and bikers set off from Hotel Hinteregger to explore the Hohe Tauern National Park, only to return and immerse themselves in the hotel’s natural pool while enjoying the urban-rural charm that defines this unique establishment.

Matrei in Osttirol lies at the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, Central Europe’s largest national park. Towering peaks, including the Großglockner and the Großvenediger, majestically surround the area. Nature stretches as far as the eye can see across various elevations. Matrei is an idyllic village that embraces tourism gently and sustainably. Katharina Hradecky, the woman behind Hotel Hinteregger, aptly describes the hotel’s philosophy: “We preserve the traditions of the past in harmony with innovation, modern architecture, and design. The people at Hinteregger and the cozy atmosphere remain true to their roots. My father brings produce from our own farm to the kitchen, and our dedicated staff gives their best every day. We still speak our Matreier dialect and keep the stories of the past alive.”

The surroundings of Hotel Hinteregger boast untouched landscapes. Guided hikes in the national park combine natural experiences with valuable knowledge. The unique Gschlößtal valley is considered the most beautiful dead-end valley in the Eastern Alps. From there, an unforgettable view unfolds, revealing the imposing glacier world around the Großvenediger. Majestic mountains, breathtaking panoramas, an extensive network of trails suitable for all skill levels, alpine pastures, and huts – whether hiking or biking, the Osttirol Mountains offer indescribable beauty. The Kalser Glocknerstraße leads to the picturesque Ködnitztal valley, offering the best view of the Großglockner. Numerous hut and mountain tours in the Glockner and Schober groups begin here. For rafting or canyoning, adventurers can explore the Isel River – the last unspoiled glacial river in the Alps. At the foot of the Lienz Dolomites, approximately 30 kilometers from Matrei, lies the Dolomitengolf Golf Club.

Wonderful days await guests of Hotel Hinteregger in the mountains, meadows, and villages. Before, after, and in between their outdoor adventures, summer enthusiasts can unwind at the hotel’s romantic natural pool. The solar-heated water is crystal clear, inviting guests to indulge in a refreshing swim. The essence of the surrounding landscape – stone, clay, wood, and water – shapes the wellness area. Glass visually connects the interior and exterior, fostering a sense of harmony between body and soul. The same can be experienced in the restaurant and the traditional Bauernstube. Honest and traditional Tyrolean cuisine crafted from local and homegrown ingredients distinguishes the menu. Vegetables and herbs are sourced from the hotel’s garden, cabbage and potatoes from the fields, and a significant portion of the meat comes from their own farm. Even the apple juice is pressed from the hotel’s own apples. All wines are carefully selected from Austrian winemakers. Slow Food with an Osttirol twist.

“Fremdenzimmer” (Guest rooms) were the term used in the past, but at Hotel Hinteregger, guests become friends. This lovingly and skillfully developed traditional hotel becomes a piece of vacation home, a source of beautiful memories from special moments throughout the year.
