The Hoxton is heading north. In summer 2027 the brand will open its second German hotel in the heart of Hamburg, after Berlin’s Charlottenburg and, counting Vienna, its third in the German-speaking world. The timing is fitting: The Hoxton, which began with a single hotel in London’s Shoreditch in 2006, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
The new hotel moves into a 1950s building on the Alter Wall, in the Nikolai Quarter between the canals, the Rathaus and the Binnenalster. It is one of the city’s best addresses for a short break: the boutiques of the Neuer Wall are on the doorstep, the Bucerius Kunst Forum and the Hilde Leiss gallery are around the corner, and the Elbphilharmonie, the merchants’ houses of the Deichstrasse and the UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt are all within about a quarter of an hour on foot.
188 rooms over eight floors
The 188 rooms are spread over floors one to eight and come in six categories, from “Cosy” via “Roomy” to “Biggy”, in typical Hoxton language. Thirty-two of them have connecting doors for families and friends travelling together. The interiors are by the Swedish studio Stylt Trampoli, who are drawing on the history of the Alter Wall and its centuries of maritime trade, especially in the public spaces.

Two restaurants, one on the roof
On the ground floor, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with 130 seats will serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner, with room for another 40 guests on the terrace by the canal. The lobby, furnished with vintage pieces and works by local artists, doubles as an all-day bar for guests and neighbours alike.
The real draw is likely to be the tenth floor. Here a seafood restaurant with 120 seats and an open show kitchen opens onto a wraparound roof terrace with views of the Elbphilharmonie, the Michel and the Rathaus. Restaurant guests get their own lift. A private dining room seats up to 20, and “The Apartment”, the brand’s signature event space, adds three meeting rooms with a pantry kitchen and a terrace on the canal.
The hotel will be run by general manager Michael Lutz, a Hamburg hotelier with long experience in openings and repositionings. The Hoxton is part of Ennismore and is being developed with The Chocolate on the Pillow Group. “The mix of historic charm and modern energy makes Hamburg the ideal home for The Hoxton,” says Cédric Gobilliard, COO of Ennismore Europe.
